In-line Service Measurements: Exploiting IPv6 Extension Headers
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ability to measure, monitor and control the service quality experienced by network traffic is becoming increasingly important as multiple traffic types are aggregated onto IP networks. This paper introduces a novel measurement technique for assessing performance metrics (e.g. one-way packet loss, delay, delay variation, and ‘goodput’) of IPv6 network flows. By exploiting native IPv6 extension headers, measurement triggers and measurement data are carried in the same packets as the payload data itself, providing a high level of probability that the behaviour of the real user traffic flows is being observed. A prototype implementation of this technique has been constructed and used to measure numerous properties of different application flows, over both wireline and wireless IPv6 environments. End-to-end, oneway delay and delay variation of real-time video streams have been measured, as well as the goodput of services operating on top of reliable transport. This measurement technique can be the basis for low-overhead, scalable, transparent and reliable measurement of individual and aggregate network flows that can be dynamically deployed where and when required in a multi-service IP environment.

A Uniform Format for IPv6 Extension Headers
In IPv6, optional internet-layer information is encoded in separate headers that may be placed between the IPv6 header and the transportlayer header. There are a small number of such extension headers currently defined. This document describes the issues that can arise when defining new extension headers and discusses the alternate extension mechanisms in IPv6. It also provides a common format ...
متن کاملExtension headers for IPv6 anycast
Anycast is a new communication paradigm defined in IPv6. Different from unicast and multicast routing, routers on the internetwork deliver an anycast datagram to the nearest available node. By shifting the task of resolving destinations from source node to internetwork, anycasting is highly flexible and cost-effective on routing process and inherently load-balanced and robust on server selectio...

Just as the Advanced Sockets API for IPv6 gives access to various extension headers and the ICMPv6 protocol, this document specifies the same level of access for Mobile IPv6 components. It specifies a mechanism for applications to retrieve and set information for Mobility Header messages, Home Address destination options, and Routing Header Type 2 extension headers. It also specifies the common...
متن کاملExperiences with IPFIX-based Traffic Measurement for IPv6 Networks
Though the popular Cisco NetFlow is widely used for flow-level traffic measurement in IPv4 networks, it is not suitable for IPv6 networks because of the fixed flow structure that cannot carry IPv6-related information. Therefore, the IETF IP Flow Information eXport (IPFIX) standard that employs the flexible flow template structure has been recently proposed to support various flow-level traffic ...
متن کاملQoS Survey in IPv6 and Queuing Methods
The routes in IP networks are determined by the IP destination address and the routing tables in each router on the path to the destination. Hence all the IP packets follow the same route until the route is changes due to congestion, link failure or topology updates. IPv4 tried using Type of Service (TOS) field in the IP header to classify traffic and that did not succeed as it was based on fai...
